How to Prepare Window Unit Air Conditioners for Summer
Breezy, chilly air is a wonderful treat during the summer time and a great running air-conditioner is a must. In a world where central heating and air-conditioning is a given, some of us Neanderthals still run window unit air conditioners. The classic window unit air conditioner will be a treat for some, and a nightmare for others. For those that do have this wonderful dinosaur, keeping it in great running order is a top priority during the sweltering days of summer. A bad running air-conditioner is like a death sentence during the hot summer time. If you wish to keep it running properly, cleaning it is at the top of the spring to-do list. This article will help you keep your window unit air-conditioner running properly.
The first thing you need to do is remove the filter and replace it. Even if it looks as though it’s in fantastic condition, you should still get a new filter each season. Often times the things that are damaging are the things that are not visible with the naked eye. Especially with the filter.
The next thing is to take a clean damp rag and clean the entire exterior of the air-conditioner. Clean the outer part of the frame. Clean the inside edges of the unit. Get in the vents and wipe down the outside of the air-conditioner. The more thorough that you are with this job, the cleaner the air you are going to get pushed into your home.
The final step that you would take to clean out your air-conditioner for the summer is to go outside of your house. Once outside, you want to clean all the debris out of the back of air-conditioner that has accumulated over the winter. Do not assume that there is no debris out there. Trust me, there will be more debris then you think caked into the crevices of the air conditioner. Take a damp rag and wipe it down entirely. Also, take the time while you are out there to pick those nasty weeds that have grown up around the edges of the air conditioner. In my case, the unit sits close to the ground, and my weed-eater spent way too much time in storage this winter.
Keeping your window unit air-conditioner running properly is not that difficult as long as you take the time to clean it properly. To me, there is nothing like the sweet sounds of a window unit air-conditioner to help me drift off to sleep on those hot summer nights. Central air, certainly has its merits, but I still like my old school window unit air conditioner. If you are like me, and take these steps, then you will be a whole lot cooler this summer.

Cleaning Your Heat Exchanger Tubes
Cleaning your heat is a job anyone can do if they know how. If you are a do it yourselfer then you should have no trouble with this task.
There are several methods to clean exchanger tubes. Here are a few of them; one is to use chemicals for the cleaning. Another is to use high-pressure water system. One last method is to employ mechanical cleaning using brushes, scrapers and abrasive balls. These are the best ways to clean the tubes.
Regular cleaning of the exchanger tubes should prolong the life of the entire unit. It will help it work at its maximum efficiency as well.
Many people use a heat exchanger system to heat their swimming pools these days. Having the ability to clean your own exchanger tubes would be a good way to save money and keep your system in top working order.
It would be beneficial to clean the exchanger tubes every few months. At least inspect them to see if they need to be cleaned. If they do not need to be cleaned, and then make sure that, they are thoroughly cleaned twice a year.
In order to clean the exchanger tubes properly, they must be removed from the system. Remove any loose material that is near the ends of the tubes and inside them as well. Use a brush and push it down the tube to get the cleaning started. The brush should have good strong nylon bristles. This helps to loosen and remove any loose materials inside.
During this brushing process, you may find that there is some material stuck to the sidewall of the exchanger tube. A plastic or metal scraper will help to remove anything that is stuck to the wall. Be careful not to damage the tube. Do not use a scraper that is harder than the material of the wall of the tube.
Try not to scratch the wall of the exchanger tubes as it could cause the tube to not function as well as it should because particles could stick to the scratches in the tube. Therefore, a plastic scraper would be best.
As a last step in cleaning the exchanger tubes, you could use a water jet to force out any loose particles that were missed with the previous methods. If you have any calcium deposits on the tubes then you will need chemicals to remove them.
Now you have the basics for cleaning your exchanger tubes. Gather as much information as possible before tackling this do it yourself job.
